Industry-recognized cloud credentials, free to Illinois Tech students, in every major.
Free Training · All Majors · No Prior Experience
Every industry is moving to the cloud, and most students graduate without the credentials employers ask for. Through Career Services’ partnership with AWS Academy, Illinois Tech students in any major can prepare for AWS certifications using free training, free lab environments, and facilitated study groups.
This is not only for computing majors. Business students use cloud economics and analytics; architecture students use cloud-based modeling; law students work on data privacy and technology contracts; psychology students work in digital health and behavioral analytics. The exam fee is the only cost, and we will talk to you about vouchers.
Why This Matters In Any Major
Cloud platforms now sit underneath finance, healthcare, architecture, logistics, research, manufacturing, and public administration. Being able to speak credibly about cloud infrastructure, cost, and security has become a general professional skill rather than a specialist one, which is why we open this program to every major rather than to computing students alone.
A certification is independent, third-party verification of that skill. It gives you something concrete to point to in an interview and a defensible reason to be considered for roles that list cloud experience as a preference. Employers frequently weigh verified technical credentials in hiring and compensation decisions, so earning one before you graduate can strengthen your position and your earning potential when you negotiate a first offer. Outcomes vary by role, employer, location, and experience, and no single credential determines a salary on its own.

1Which Certification, and How Long
Three levels — start at the bottom unless you already work in cloud▾
Foundational
Cloud Practitioner
For everyone, no prior experience needed. Cloud concepts, core services, security, and pricing. Roughly three to four months at three to four hours a week. This is the right starting point regardless of major.
Associate
Solutions Architect · Developer · SysOps
For students moving toward technical cloud roles. Architecture and cost design, application development and deployment, or systems operations and automation. Four to six months each; Cloud Practitioner first is recommended.
Specialty
Security · Machine Learning · Data Analytics
Advanced positioning for cybersecurity, data science, and analytics students. Six to twelve months, with an associate-level certification recommended first.

On cost: the training, curriculum, and lab access are free. AWS charges a fee to sit the certification exam. Ask your coach about vouchers before you register for one.
3Common Questions
Experience, time, scheduling, and international students▾
Do I need technical experience? No. The Cloud Practitioner track is built for beginners, and students from business, psychology, law, and other non-technical majors are welcome.
How much time? Plan on three to four hours a week for foundational, four to six for associate level. Study groups meet weekly and the rest is self-paced.
Will it conflict with coursework? Study groups avoid common class times, and self-paced materials flex around exams and projects.
What if I already know cloud? We will assess your readiness and place you at the associate or specialty level instead.
Can international students participate? Yes. AWS certifications are recognized globally and are a clear way to document technical skill for employers.
