Course Structure & Experience

How the Career Accelerator with Braven Works

Braven Career Success is divided into three phases. Throughout the course, fellows are grouped into small cohorts with other Illinois Tech students from various majors, allowing them to connect across disciplines and develop teamwork skills that mirror the real world.

Phase 1

Design Your Career

Bond with your cohort of fellows by sharing core value stories. Explore leadership, values, and career interests to create a career project plan. Complete the “Find My Ikigai” exercise to discover the intersection of what you enjoy, what you’re good at, and what careers align with both.

Phase 2

Launch Your Career

Build or refine your resume, develop interview skills through mock interviews and informational interviews with professionals, and learn to communicate your story clearly and concisely. Receive extensive feedback on cover letters and practice your skills at networking events.

Phase 3

Capstone Challenge

Partner with a local employer to tackle a real-world business challenge over five weeks. Use design thinking to analyze the problem, develop actionable solutions, and present your recommendations to a panel of professionals — gaining direct exposure to industry expectations.

In-Class Activities — Group Work:

Learning Labs: 2-hour weekly discussions (synchronous)

Capstone: One group Capstone Challenge project

Out-of-Class Activities — Independent Work:

Online Modules: 90–120 minutes weekly

Portfolio: Weekly submissions

Coaching: One 1:1 conversation with your Leadership Coach

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible?

Sophomores, juniors, and transfer students. You do not need a declared major to enroll.

When is it offered?

Fall semesters only. Two sections: Wednesdays 5:00–7:00 PM or Thursdays 3:15–5:15 PM. If you have scheduling conflicts, consider the other section.

Does it affect my GPA?

Yes. BRVN 200 is a 3-credit course that factors into your GPA. Full attendance and participation are expected. The course can only be taken once.

Can this help me decide on a major?

Yes — the course includes “Find My Ikigai,” a framework that helps you explore the intersection of what you enjoy, what you’re good at, and what careers align with both. You’ll also create a career roadmap to navigate academic and career pathways at Illinois Tech.

How is this different from other courses?

This isn’t a lecture. You’ll be part of a small, tight-knit group of 5–8 students, working together throughout the semester. Each group is led by a Leadership Coach — a working professional who brings real-world perspective into every session. The course is built around collaboration and active participation.

Will Braven place me in a job or internship?

Braven is not a placement organization. Instead, they ensure you have the confidence, skills, experiences, and networks to apply and succeed. Students also receive access to an opportunities newsletter and Braven’s exclusive Talent Directory.

What’s expected in virtual sessions?

Camera on, active participation, and full engagement — just as you would in person. Being fully present and minimizing distractions will help you maximize your relationship with your Leadership Coach and peers.

Does this count toward Elevate?

Yes. BRVN 200 qualifies as an Elevate requirement or optional experience. It also satisfies the required career component for Chicago Difference and Hope Chicago scholars. Ask your Elevate Student Success Coach for details on how it fits into your specific checklist.
