What This Page Is For
Employers do not ask whether you took a class. They ask what you did.
The competencies employers screen for are built by doing — and doing does not have to cost anything. Everything below is free to Illinois Tech students and produces something you can point at afterward: a credential with your name on it, a project with a real client, a résumé line with a number in it, and a story you can tell out loud.
Do not try to do all of it. Pick one thing from Section 2 or 3 and one room from Section 6 or 7, and let Section 8 handle the calendar.

The Kaplan Institute, the Idea Shop, IPRO, and the labs your tuition already covers▾
Before you go looking downtown, use what is already on 33rd Street. These are Illinois Tech’s own professional development activities — open to students, staffed by people whose job is to help you, and already covered by tuition.
Innovation and entrepreneurship
The Kaplan Institute and the Idea Shop
Illinois Tech’s home for innovation and tech entrepreneurship sits at 10 West 35th Street, and most of what happens inside it is open to any student.
Ed Kaplan Family Institute
Mentoring for student founders, special programming, and a staff that hires students to help run the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Open Monday through Friday. iit.edu/kaplan

The Idea Shop

Three places where Illinois Tech students end up in a room with people who hire.
IPRO Program
Cross-major teams solving problems sponsored by companies and nonprofits, running since 1995 and required of undergraduates. It is the easiest place on campus to earn evidence of leadership, project management, and public speaking. IPRO Program
Innovation Day
Every semester closes with teams presenting posters, demos, and prototypes to campus, sponsors, and the public. Go once before you take IPRO so you know what a strong project looks like. Elevate runs an optional exploration around it. Innovation Day exploration

Google, freeCodeCamp, MIT — and what your Chicago Public Library card unlocks▾
A certificate is not the point. The project you build with it is. Take the course, then immediately apply it to something that belongs to you — a club budget, a dataset, a nonprofit’s spreadsheet — so the credential arrives with evidence attached.

Chicago Cares plans 200 volunteer projects open to the public every month; VolunteerMatch filters by cause and neighborhood.
Two rules. Legitimate volunteering never charges a fee. And on a student visa, charity volunteering and unpaid work are different categories — ask the Office of Global Services first.
5Chicago’s Innovation Ecosystem
Incubators and innovation hubs — and the Elevate experience that routes you through them▾
Chicago’s incubators run public programming, and most of it is free and open to students. These are the rooms where you meet founders and early employees — the people who know about a role well before it is posted.
Chicago Innovation Ecosystem Explorer
Elevate’s optional experience for Year 1 and Year 2 students, and the simplest way in. Attend events at three or more approved hubs, connect with founders on LinkedIn, and write a 500-word reflection — eight to fifteen hours across a semester. It is free: partner events are open to students, and many of them feed you. The page carries the current event-calendar link for each hub. Start with the Ecosystem Explorer

Two habits make these rooms work. Register even when an event is free, because the host list is how you get told about the next one. And look for the words demo, pitch, or showcase in the title — those are the rooms with the most founders standing in them.

Chicago networking is mostly free rooms on a schedule, all open to college students. Go twice. Regulars hear “we are hiring” before it posts.

Guest visits are free; clubs across the Loop and online. If interviews shake your voice, this is the fix. How to join

Volunteer at conferences
Major conventions in Chicago regularly recruit student volunteers, and a few shifts often waives a registration fee you could never pay. Search “your field + conference + Chicago + student volunteer.”

Start with your department’s student chapter on 312, then ask one professor which gathering they would attend if they were job hunting.

Knowing how your city works builds leadership evidence, a professional network, and the most credible “why Chicago” there is. Open to every student, whether or not you can vote.

How to search
Finding Events on LinkedIn, Including Virtual Ones
LinkedIn does not put its events behind a separate site — you have to know the filter is there. Three habits turn it into a standing supply of rooms you can attend from a dorm desk.
Search, then filter to Events
Type a topic into the search bar — your field, a company, a technology — then narrow the results to Events in the filter row. Virtual events are listed the same way as in-person ones, so distance stops mattering.
Follow the hosts
Follow the employers, professional associations, and industry groups in your field. Their events reach your feed on their own, which is far more reliable than remembering to go looking.
Check a company before you apply
Open the Events tab on a company page before submitting an application. An info session or a webinar is the cheapest way to have something specific to say about them.

You may attend and count an event that Career Services and Experiential Learning did not host. If you do, be ready to defend it. Expect to explain how that event connects to your professional career goals and to your co-curricular plan — in your written reflection, and in conversation with your Elevate Success Coach. Choose events you can argue for. If you are unsure whether one will hold up, ask before you attend, not after.
A short habit that makes all of this easier: after any event, write three lines the same night — what it was, who you met, and what you would tell an interviewer about it. Those three lines are the reflection, the résumé bullet, and the interview answer, already written.
8The Plan: Sixteen Weeks, Four Moves
