Attend seven to ten Galvin Library events or workshops, found on 312. Log what each one taught you. Finish with a short written argument.

What you walk away with
A Session Log, and the Case for the Library
Attendance alone proves you sat in ten rooms. The written piece is where you argue what the library actually does for a career – not that reading is good, but which specific resource changes a job search, and how. Most students graduate having used the library as a quiet building, which is the point this experience exists to correct.
No cost – all of it is included in tuition you already pay. Book sessions at the start of term, because the useful small-format ones fill first. One thing worth knowing while you are there: Galvin has an interview room you can reserve, which is a quiet, professional background for a virtual interview and considerably better than a dorm room or a corridor. Reference help is also available by phone and chat if you get stuck between sessions. Ask a coach which sessions to prioritize
1ABOUTWhat This Is▾
Seven to ten sessions run by Galvin Library across a semester, listed on 312 alongside everything else happening on campus. The library’s programming is wider than students expect: tours, instruction sessions, an intro for online learners, open houses, and career-facing sessions including one on how to do company research run with Career Services.
The reason this is a career experience rather than an academic one is what you find along the way. Subject specialists you can book, a research appointment system, the A-Z database list, interlibrary loan through MyILL, 3D printing, and group study and interview rooms you can reserve – all included in tuition, and most of it unknown to the students paying for it.

Who This Suits
Right For You If
Students who have never asked a librarian anything. International students learning a new research culture. Anyone whose research still starts and ends with a search engine.
College Alignment
Where This Fits
Illinois Tech is organizing its programs into three interdisciplinary colleges. Illinois Tech Futures
Industry Research Deep Dive uses library databases to produce three company briefs – one research output, eight to ten hours. This is breadth rather than depth: ten different sessions, a map of what the library offers, and a written argument about why that matters professionally. Do this one first and the research card gets considerably easier.
2THE WORKFour Moves Across Ten Sessions▾
Attendance is the requirement. These four are what make the log worth writing and the piece worth reading.
Library sessions sit on 312 with everything else, and the small-format ones fill. Put seven to ten in your calendar at the start of term rather than hoping to catch them – this is the step that decides whether you finish.
Feeds: The log
Research skills, tools and software, career-facing sessions such as company research, and maker or technology sessions. Ten of the same kind teaches you one thing ten times; a spread is what produces an argument later.
Feeds: The skills
Subject specialists you can book, research appointments, the A-Z database list, interlibrary loan, 3D printing, and bookable study and interview rooms. Write each down as you discover it – this list becomes the spine of your written piece.
Feeds: The access
Not a summary of ten sessions. A short piece answering one question: which library resource would change a job search, and how. Name it, say what it does, and say what you would have done without it.
