The SEAOI Student Chapter at IIT exists to bridge the gap between classroom structural engineering and the real-world practice of designing, investigating, repairing, and improving structures. The chapter will provide consistent access to industry professionals, practical technical learning, and career development opportunities to help develop the new generation of Structural Engineers.
We will give students practical exposure to structural engineering beyond typical coursework by connecting them with practicing engineers, real project case studies, and career-development support. Members will build stronger intuition for load paths, detailing, constructability, and how structures perform and get repaired, while also gaining networking access that can lead to mentorship, internships, and clearer understanding of different structural career paths. Since this chapter will be supported by the broader SEAOI organization, we will have access to time of top engineers and firms so students can see how a top-level engineer designs structures that are used by
so many people a day. This will promote career readiness and overall better understanding of field and the path of licensure.
1. Connect students with practicing engineers in training, engineers and structural engineers through panels, Q&A sessions, office visits, and mentorship.
2. Build practical skills that complement coursework including but not limited to constructability, design intuition, effective communication and effective observation.
3. Support career readiness with resume reviews, internship pipelines, interview prep and industry networking.
4. Expose students to the wide breadth of structural engineering include buildings, bridges, temporary structures and the wide variety of opportunities in structural engineering.
5. Promote professional ethics, responsibility and a safety culture by showcasing the importance of ethics for an engineer and learning about structural engineering failures through modern history and its impact on the field.
