Frederick is both a practicing physician as well as the Medical Director for the Auburn University Medical Clinic. Inspired by his childhood physician, Frederick balances seeing regular patients at his internal medicine practice, directing a major university health clinic, and teaching new methods to fellow on-site doctors. >> So my name is Fred Kam, and my role, really I do a number of different things. First and foremost, I'm a physician. And so I'm an internist by specialty. I see patients on a regular basis. In addition to that, I serve as the executive and the medical director of the Auburn University Medical Clinic. So I have responsibilities for administrating, helping come up with strategies and protocols, everything from prevention as well as disaster planning for both the university and the community. So it's kind of a wide range of areas. And because I also do administration, I help teach health administration to students. I help teach at the nursing school, at the pharmacy school, and different areas. You know, each day is a little different. I try to put aside, again, specific times to see patients, but patients don't decide typically when they're going to get sick. They can get sick at any point, and I'm very big about trying to see my own patients on a continuity of care basis. So I put aside a few half days during the week to see patients, but in between meetings or other scheduled things, I'll try and squeeze patients in who are either sick or the times that I've put aside didn't quite fit their schedule. So you know, one day I could spend little or no time seeing patients, and then the next day I could spend 80% of the day seeing patients. So it varies, and it's a very dynamic, moving schedule, which makes it fun, never bored. We plan for a lot of things. We plan for everything from an active shooter on campus to a bombing in the football stadium or one of the arenas to tornado or natural disaster to chemical spill to radioactive situation. So there's all sorts of situations that we plan for.
