Remote work is no longer a perk — it is a permanent lane of the labor market, and for students it is a strategic one. A remote search widens your market beyond any single city. It lets you build real, paid experience before you relocate. And it can work as a bridge: land a remote role with a Chicago company from anywhere in the world, and you are building Chicago experience on your resume before you ever arrive.

Read This Before You Apply Anywhere
Remote listings attract more scams than any other corner of the job market, and students are a favorite target. The Federal Trade Commission’s official guidance is short and worth reading in full. The red flags that end a conversation immediately:
- Anyone who asks you to pay — for equipment, training, or a “starter kit.” Legitimate employers never charge you to get hired.
- “Deposit this check, then send some back” — the check will bounce and the money you sent is gone. The FTC calls this one out by name: walk away.
- Receiving and reshipping packages — this is not a job; it is a fraud operation.
- Instant offers, chat-app-only interviews, and pay far above market for little work — verify every employer independently through their official site before you share any personal information.
- If it already happened, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and tell your bank the same day — speed is what limits the damage.

Two rules protect you. First, work authorization applies to remote work too — before accepting any paid remote role while on a student visa, confirm your eligibility with the International Center and the Office of Global Services, and loop in your career coach. Second, read every listing’s eligibility line: many “remote” roles hire only within specific countries or time zones. Boards like Himalayas let you filter for this upfront — use it and save yourself the dead-end applications.
